OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Senators GM Bryan Murray is still trying to move winger Dany Heatley but is toying with using the first day of training camp as his deadline for interested teams. Garrioch claims sources say the San Jose Sharks and NY Rangers recently spoke with Murray but haven't found a good fit.
Commish's Note:
It'll interesting to see how Heatley plays in a Sens uniform this season.
BOSTON GLOBE: Fluto Shinzawa reports a league source claims several teams have contacted the Bruins about the availability of restricted free agent winger Phil Kessel. He's recovering from off-season shoulder surgery and Shinzawa suggests he might not be ready to play until December, meaning the Bruins don't have to make a trade swiftly.
Commishs Note:
There are 11 teams that can afford a $5mil cap hit (which should be MORE than enough to sign Kessel. Out of those 11 teams I see maybe 3 making an offer sheet (Devils, Sharks, Ducks)
VANCOUVER SUN: Elliott Pap reports Canucks potential backup goalie Cory Schneider wasn't surprised by the recent re-signing of goaltender Roberto Luongo to a 12-year contract extension. GM Mike Gillis said he's under no pressure to trade Schneider and told the goalie he'd be given every opportunity to make the Canucks this season.
Commish's Note:
Looks like Schnieder is a goalie a in the wrong place at the wrong time. Its hard to believe that in a 30 team league there is an over abundance of goalies. A lot of teams have two potential #1 goalies in their organization (in NYI's case, three) so I cant see anyone picking up Schneider unless he's an add on in a trade. If Minnesota's having a hrad time dealing Harding you know times are bad for goalies.
USA TODAY: Kevin Allen recently reported Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell remains confident he can re-sign superstar winger Ilya Kovalchuk, who is eligible for UFA status next summer. Waddell said talks were constructive including an exchange of contract numbers, meaning talks have progressed further than those with Marian Hossa two years ago. Kovalchuk has said he wants to see real improvement with the Thrashers and Waddell's off-season additions, including Nik Antropov and Pavel Kubina, appear aimed at keeping the sniper in Atlanta.
Commishs Note:
You gotta feel for Kovy here. He's been the unltimate franchise guy for Atlanta and Wadell seems incapable to put a winning product on the ice. You can blame Ilya for wanting to see what his options will be come FA time.
NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports the Rangers are "for the first time in memory" exercising all their systematic contract negotiation leverage under the CBA against an important young player - Brandon Dubinsky - who has no leverage. The Rangers have a one-year, $522.5K qualifier on the table for Dubinsky, as well as multi-year offers ranging from two to five years. Brooks claims Dubinsky would be sure to lose money on the back end of a multi-year contract should he apply for salary arbitration next summer. His agent claims he and his client have had positive and amicable discussions with the Rangers, Dubinsky was looking forward to the upcoming season and hopes to have a deal in place before training camp begins.
Commish's Note:
for the 1st time in memory is an understatement.
