VANCOUVER SUN: Elliott Pap reports neither Canucks management or Roberto Luongo's agent will comment on speculation the netminder is about to sign a 12-year, $64 million contract extension. Teammates Sami Salo and Shane O'Brien voiced their approval of the possibility Luongo could stay in Vancouver beyond this season but Willie Mitchell preferred not to speculate saying he'd speak about it once Luongo is officially signed.
Commish Notes:
He'll be 31 when the contract takes effect, making his 43 when it expires. The cap hit is $5.34mil, which is a good deal....but if he retires befoer his contract ends it still counts towards the cap because he signed it befoer he was 33 years old.....bad deal
CHAMPIONAT.RU: cited a Sport-Express interview with former NY Ranger Nikolai Zherdev who claimed his agent is in contact with several NHL teams, with the most serious discussions being with the Atlanta Thrashers. Zherdev said he's like to play for the Thrashers as they have several good Russian players.
Commish Notes:
If the Thrashers are indeed interested in signing him, Kovalchuk could be the player to kick Zherdev in the pants to kick start his career.
OCREGISTER.COM: Curtis Zupke praised Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray for the moves he's made to improve the club since taking over for Brian Burke last fall as well as clearing cap space. Zupke does point out however Murray still has to sort out the tricky goaltending situation between J.S. Giguere and Jonas Hiller, plus Hiller and winger Bobby Ryan will be due big raises after this season.
Commish's Note:
Agreed. He's got the team younger, cheaper and better. The goalie situation is a sticky one. They want to keep Hiller but can't deal Giggy, and after this season they can't afford both of them. The only thing I can possibly see happen is if Giggy waives his NTC to go to LA for far less than market value.
