OTTAWA CITIZEN: Ken Warren speculates if the Flames would be willing to move Phaneuf, pending free agent Mike Cammalleri for Heatley, or if the Edmonton Oilers would offer up Patrick O'Sullivan or Dustin Penner, or if the Vancouver Canucks might be willing to part with Mason Raymond and pending UFA blueliner Mattias Ohlund, or if the Kings might offer up Frolov or the Anaheim Ducks Corey Perry. Warren then points out those players were once linked to Jason Spezza when he was the topic of trade speculation this past season.Garrioch lists the LA Kings (claiming they're trying to move defenseman Jack Johnson and might be willing to move forward Alexander Frolov in a package), St. Louis Blues (have plenty of young talent to offer and might be willing to spend this summer), Calgary Flames (suggesting they might be willing to move defenseman Dion Phaneuf to get Heatley, a Calgary native), Minnesota Wild (cap space and a need to replace Marian Gaborik) and the NY Rangers (would like to move either Scott Gomez or Chris Drury) as possibilities.
Commish's Note:
Alot of team to sort through....so let me do it in point form..
- Sutter wont deal Phaneuf for anyone, so unless the Sens are happy with a Reghr centerpiece trade I don't see that happening.
- Why the hell woudl Murray want Penner or O'Sulivan as the centrepiece of a deal? That makes no sense.
- I don't know much about Raymond, so I can't really say much about Vancouver's chances. But why trade one of the elite Wingers in the league so the rights to a UFA when you can just go after him on the open market (unless its just an add on)
- Johnson/Frolov/LA's 1st seems like a good possibility to me
- Never really thought about the Blues until now..they definitely have the assets and space to land him.
- I don't see any team want Gomez right now and I doubt they want to take on Drury's contract.
- I don't see the Ducks breaking up the Perry/Getzlaf combo...
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Jason Botchford reports Canucks GM Mike Gillis could be willing to take a calculated risk in walking away from the Sedin twins if he's unable to re-sign the pair to affordable contracts. While Botchford acknowledged the difficulty Gillis could face in replacing the Twins the Canucks GM - a former player agent - also knows they'd prefer to remain with the Canucks and hopes to use that leverage to his advantage. The Sedins could stand to make millions on the open market but it would mean uprooting their families and moving them into the unknown.
Commish's Note:
I stand by my position that the Sedins are great players, but nothing special and definitely not players to build around. I say let them walk if they want more than 5.5 a season.
THE TENNESSEAN: John Glennon reports the longer Alexander Radulov remains silent on his future plans the more Nashville Predators GM David Poile doubts Radulov will return with the club next season. Team captain Jason Arnott is hopeful Radulov will return, suggesting that could also play a role in re-signing UFA winger Steve Sullivan. Poile said he intends to talks with Sullivan's agent later this week but reports little progress with other UFAs Greg Zanon, Vern Fiddler and Joel Ward.
Commish's Note:
Why play in Nashville when you can be making 3mil a season playing at home? Can't blame the guy for going here the money is, but I would liek to see him play in the NHL again
OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the Pittsburgh Penguins could be in the market for a defenseman in the off-season, claiming Rod Scuderi will "likely departure" for free agency this summer. Garrioch cites sources suggesting GM Ray Shero could try to land a puck-moving defenseman to take pressure off Sergei Gonchar. The best available one is Jay Bouwmeester but he's expected to sign in Western Canada. Anaheim's Francois Beauchemin is a possibility, suggesting Shero could sell the Penguins based on their consecutive Cup final appearances.
Commish`s Note
The need for a puck moving d-man isn't as great when you have Malkin and Crosby on your roster, but ti's still a nice thing to have for sure. Bouw's $$$ demands I dont think can be met by the Pens. I don't know why they would want to part with Scuderi after the finals he's been having, and I'm sure they'd rather have a defensive minded blueliner to replace Gill more than would anotehr puck mover.
WASHINGTON POST: Tarik El-Bashir reports agent Pat Brisson, who represents Capitals goalie Brent Johnson and forward Sergei Fedorov, said he opened discussions with the Caps over extensions for his two clients. Brisson said Fedorov has a different agent negotiating with the KHL, and said the Capitals are interested in re-signing Johnson, which is interesting as it's uncertain what they means for Jose Theodore while the Caps also have playoff hero Simeon Varlomov and Michal Neuvirth in the mix.
Commish's Note:
Theo is untradeable right now and if they want to rid themselves of him, they would have to do it via waivers. If they do infact sign Johnson to a reasonable contract Hershey will have a new keep in Theo!
