NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports the Rangers need an elite offensive talent if they're to become legitimate Stanley Cup contenders and suggests the club consider signing Marian Gaborik, considering him the best available option in this summer's UFA market. Brooks notes Gaborik does come with risk considering his injury history and that the Montreal Canadiens and LA Kings have more available cap space to pursue him if they're unable to land Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier via trade. Brooks suggests offering a one-year, heavily bonus laden contract.
Commish's Note:
To my understanding, the whole purpose for Gabby to hit the UFA market was for him to get a long term deal, so what Brooks is suggesting probably wont cut it to land Gabby, no matter how much sense it makes. I doubt we'll see the Rangers be big players via Free Agency, unless they waive Wade Redden's stupid high contract.
CSNPHILLY.COM: Tim Panaccio reports the Philadelphia Flyers are very likely to announce the signing of Ray Emery this week, according to a club executive. The new contract is expected to be a one-year, one-way contract worth $1.5 million. Chuck Gormley reports if and when Emery signs with the Flyers it'll be for one reason: he's a cheap alternative to Martin Biron, who's believed seeking $5 million per season.
Commish's Note:
That is a big reaon, yes...But we forget that Emery led the playoff chock artists Sens to the cup finals, so he's no slouch himself. When focused, I would personally take Emery over Biron.
Ottawa Sun: Bruce Garrioch reports the Pittsburgh Penguins might be interested in Martin Havlat should the Chicago Blackhawks fail to re-sign him. The Wild, Canucks, Oilers and his former team the Senators have also shown interest although the latter would have to dump salary to free up cap space.
Commish's Note:
I'm sure the list of teams that are interested in Havlat doesn't stop there, its whether they can afford him at his terms and are willing tot take the gamble. I don't know why the Pens would spend that money on their offense with Malkin, Staal, Crosby and Kunitz still under contract when they have some serious holes on their back end that they need to address.
