With the Minnesota Northstars early exit from this years playoffs, the focus now moves to Dallas. Minnesota lost in game seven to the Quebec Nordiques, a team they had beat 7 out of 8 games in the regular season. This must come as a huge upset to the fans and management.
Dallas has had a lot to cheer about this season. They battled for top spot all season with the Montreal Canadiens and finished the regular season as the top team in the league with 65 wins and 134 points. The team was lead by rookie defensemen Brent Sopel, who was drafted 13th overall in last seasons draft. In Brent's rookie season he outscored the entire league finishing with 120 points (34G, 86A), an amazing season for a defensemen.
The Stars are full of talent. Players such as Jason Arnott, Glen Murray, Roman Hamrlik, Kimmo Timonen are among only a few that could crack the pro line up next season. They also have a fantastic goalie in Roman Turek, who will most likely be playing in Minnesota next season.
The Stars took out the Phoenix Coyotes in a relatively easy 5 games. They now face the surprising Buffalo Sabres in round two.
The Northstars early exit will only make the baby Stars better, as Mikeal Renberg will add some offence on the left side and defensive specialists Darian Hatcher and Marek Malik will round out an already tough defensive squad. The team wanted these players to gain some valuable play-off experience.
Good luck to the Sabres, but we would like to make quick work of you!
